Meeting Discussion

3/5/2015

  • We spoke about creating an application where we would be able to pay for parking spaces from our application. We discussed potential issues.
    • The possibility of using scannable QR codes in order to pay for the parking spot that you are planning to use. If the QR code is not present there will be a number sketched into the parking meter as a backup.
      • We could install NFC tags, however that would add to the overall cost.
      • Would make it easier for individuals to pay for parking, they won't have to make sure to get change
      • The city may have to collect the money in the parking meter less, may save on costs in the long run.
    • We are planning on adding a map that lists available street parking and parking that is already taken up. This will allow individuals to locate an open parking spot easier.
      • We could add a button that allows the phone to navigate you to the open parking spot
        • To make it easier maybe outsource that task to a different application.
      • The list of available parking spaces and parking already in use would be accessible by the City of Detroit Parking Violations Bureau or whichever department is in charge of issuing parking violations.
    • We could add a notification feature for the application that tells the user that you have 10 minutes remaining, 5 minutes remaining, etc.
      • As a type of "pardon" users maybe able to add up to a maximum of 10 additional minutes to their parking spot if they are running late.
        • Encourages users to use the application, may possibly help bring in additional revenue
    • We are planning to keep the old parking meters still in use for individuals that don't have a smartphone.
      • Still have to fix them.
    • Planning on labeling it a way to move Detroit forward. No other city has this system in place. Help pave the way to a better Detroit.
