Ashley's usability test

Section one:

Hello:           (subject),

This is a performance test, testing the usability of an instruction set about how to coat a silk screen with photo emulsion for screen-printing. The test will be a partial performance test, for sake of time and materials. I chose this type of test because the content is best understood when practiced.

The test will run 15-20 minutes and will be covering a variety of tasks within the screen coating process. The purpose of this test is to determine the overall clarity of the instruction set, the flow, and the understandability. As a test subject, you will be recorded on things such as asking questions, if you have difficulty, and if you follow the directions thoroughly.  I am a fibers major and have done these processes many times before so if there are questions I am here to help. I am both the test facilitator and the observer. I will be watching as your perform the tasks and taking notes. I will ask two sets of questions, one before the test and one after.

For sake of time, the test will have a mock section where you’ll be using sodium alginate instead of the photo emulsion chemical. This is a dye paste that will not harm the screen and does not have time limitations in order to use. None of the materials of processes are harmful and you are not in any danger by participating. There is nothing you can do wrong or damaging and your time for this test is appreciated. Again, this test is to determine understandability and flow of the instruction set. The results of this test will be used strictly to improve my draft.

I ________________________________ have read the consent form and agree to participate in the test.

  4. 4.     Would you consider taking a fibers class?
  5. 5.     Would you consider taking an art class?
  6. 6.     What was your interest in participating for this test?

First, I'll ask you to view my WikiHow page and tell me your initial response.

Strictly thinking of appearances, how does the page appear to you?

Is there anything you think needs improvement?

Was the content of this page evenly dispersed? Did the page flow well?

Tasks-

Using the task instructions provided, we'll be testing part 1 & 2. The location and materials have been set up for you so everything you would need to do to get to this step has been done. You will only be tested on 3 of the steps.

1. Go to part 1, step 5 and review your surrounding area to make sure all of the equipment and location has been set up properly.

2. Now move to part 2 step 1. Using the equipment, coat the screen as indicated in the instruction set.

3. Now move to step 2.

Post test survey:

  1. 1.     On a scale of 1-5, 1 being the worst and 5 being the best, how would you rate this instruction set?
  2. 2.     Where do you think the set could use more work?
  3. 3.     Where was there some confusion?
  4. 4.     Were the graphics and photos helpful?
  5. 5.     Should there have been more?
  6. 6.     How would you rate the flow of the instruction set?
