1. I am mostly focused on whether or not my language in my usability test is clear. When testing my instruction set, I will be able to tell if the wording I chose was sufficient or if I need to revise it. I have done this process many times before therefore I have background knowledge and experience and I need to make sure my writing is not too complex. My main focus is clarity.
2. Ideally, my target audience would be anyone interested in photo silk screening. Just because I am an art major does not mean that only art majors are limited to this practice. I would like to realistically test my instruction set 3 times to 3 different audiences. I will test an art major, someone who has experience with the tools and in the studio. I will test someone from our class, someone who has knowledge with the assignment. And I will test someone who has no knowledge of either the studio or the assignment. I think I will get varied test results and feedback across the board to further clarify my instruction set.
3. A performance test would definitely be the most appropriate and beneficial to my instruction set. With this test I would help set up the process and watch as my testers complete the tasks, see where the struggle, if they do, and I’d be able to see if anywhere along the way the instructions get a little stiff. I could take my testers to my studio where everything is centrally located and where I have all of the materials. I would create a checklist similar to what we used in the class, for each step and leave a place for additional notes. After the task has been completed I could either interview each tester or offer a survey. A location test would be most beneficial for me in means of time. I could easily print out my WikiHow page and ask for input on my writing, grouping, headlines, photos, etc. If I can do multiple tests, I could easily do this one when testing someone from class. Considering that my instruction set is performing a very specific task that is better understood if actually attempted, the location testing would not be the best choice for me. The understandability test offers straightforward clarification on the writing of the steps. This test would benefit me because I could get the clarity I seek but my instructions are action based and not verbally based therefore it would make more sense to actually test it than to talk about testing it.
4.Scope- I will be testing how to expose a silk screen with photo emulsion. I can provide a link or print out my WikiHow page with my introduction, which then leads into my instruction set. Providing this information will show the content in which I wish to cover.
Purpose- Can art majors, Eng3050 students, and anyone else follow an art-based instruction set to coat a silk screen with photo emulsion? Are my instructions clear to all kinds of readers? Am I too stiff in writing in the steps? Have I included too much/not enough information? Do the steps easily flow from one to the next? Do these instructions have any flaws?
Schedule and location- We already have planned our tests for Thurs. Feb 19 and considering I want to do a performance test, I will have to bring my testers to the studio located in old main. I will test 3 subjects at 3 different times; I don’t want one test to be effected by the results of another. Each test should take maximum 30. I will “fast forward” the exposure time for means of testing and time constraints.
Sessions- I will test someone from class while in class, an art major after class, and my sister, roommate, or someone passing by, later in the afternoon on Thursday.
Equipment- I will do the tests on my laptop and take photos to document if necessary. I can use Excel or word to document by results.
Participants- I will test an art major, someone who has experience with the tools and in the studio. I will test someone from our class, someone who has knowledge with the assignment. And I will test someone who has no knowledge of either the studio or the assignment.
Scenarios- I will really only have one scenario.
Metrics- Q & A of previous experience before the test and a survey after to report and record findings or problems.
Quantitative Metrics-successful completion rates, error rates, time on task, etc.
Roles- I will be the test facilitator as well as primary note-taker. This process does not require a whole team of people and can be tested with only the test subject and the tester.
