Ashley's Feedback For Project 2

Page history last edited by Humayoun Ahmed 9 years, 10 months ago

Phase 1

Introduction

  • Clear and specific title
  • Identify the knowledge level that maybe recommenced to undergo this project. Maybe clarify intended readers a bit more bluntly.
  • Good job on general step by step instructions in introduction
  • Gives reason and motivation for using this process or this wikiHow in the first sentence
  • Conventions used can be adjusted
    • Including a preview of the structure
      • You can state where the things you need are before you start part 1
    • Let the audience know where things are  (kind of the same thing as above)
  • Doesn't include safety information in intro, not sure if that's necessary

Description of Equipment

  • Key parts may need to be addressed
    • The things you absolutely need and can't comprise on
  • Maybe requirements of drop cloth (dimensions
    • When listing key parts maybe include any additional information that can help make it "idiot proof"

Materials & Equipment

  • Part 1 step 4
    • you could use more bullet points to break the paragraph down
  • Yes tells readers what materials and equipment to gather before starting (setting up)

Directions

  • Supports rapid comprehension and immediate use by providing info needed
    • Uses active voice
    • Doesn't highlight keywords or key steps
    • Using bullet points to make it easier to read would help with more rapid comprehension
      • Sort of looks congested/condensed
      • More pictures would help especially during essential part of the procedure
      • Bullet points are helpful when executing the directions, so if someone is trying to this while following the directions they can come back to the step they left off on instead of looking through the paragraph
  • Does label parts and each step within the part has a summary of what you're going to do
    • Can't put blank paces in wikiHow but it would be helpful if you can
  •  Actions are in bold and how to get to those actions are provided afterwards in a paragraph format
    • Overall actions stand out visually
  •  Has clear parts and steps under are relevant
  • Could use more graphics
  • Doesn't present branching steps
    • Would be helpful, and visually appealing

Troubleshooting

  • In the warning section
    • Would be helpful if it was in troubleshooting
  • Does a good job

Graphics

  • Needs more graphics
  • Neat, could be easier to read.

Page Design

  • Its WikiHow

Proofreading

  • Good, make touch-ups before final draft
  • More concise wording

Phase 2

A) Does the Introduction section do the following:

  1. Explain what the how-to covers for an audience who might not fully understand the process under review
    1. I think you could set a knowledge level required, or a skill set required
  2. Argue for why a casual viewer might be interested in this procedure
    1. Not really, could introduce what the final product could look like, tells you what you will be creating but doesn't create the interest for the product
  3. Indicate how easy/difficult the process is and/or what specialized knowledge is necessary/useful
    1. Doesn't necessarily clearly define how difficult or easy it will be to an an individual  with no experience

B) Does the introduction apply the basic strategies and tone for 'serious' or 'lighthearted' instruction sets discussed in WikiHow's tutorial?   If so, is it doing so effectively?

  1. More serious tone, straight to the point

C) Does the introduction answers the "questions reader's asks" (see p. 573)?

  1. Answers what process will provide, doesn't talk about product or need for product
  2. Doesn't clearly state if any special knowledge is needed to execute process if any is needed at all
  3. Needs to provide preivew of structure

If necessary, spend some time (10 minutes or so) co-authoring any needed improvements.

D) Does the superstructure seem complete, or is there a section that should be added? (See p. 574, andWikiHow's superstructure or "Standard Order of Sections")  Consider in particular whether "warning" or "safety" sections should be included.

  1. Needs to provide basic preview of superstructure in intro, other than that its all good
  2. More bullet points would be helpful

Ensure the author knows how to add sections on Wikihow if applicable, and what resources from the textbook or website to use when drafting.

E) If applicable, comment on whether the description of equipment is clearly explaining equipment.  Are there images?  Should there be?

  1. Doesn't really describe equipment, lists it
  2. I don't think there needs to be pictures for equipment

F) In the main section, the "Steps" or "Directions" section, does the author "Write Each Direction for Rapid Comprehension and Immediate Use" (see p. 582 and consider each of the four criteria)

  • See phase 1

If necessary, help the writer edit one step for the 'active voice', concision, and imperative mood.

G) In the main section, the "Steps" or "Directions" section, does the author "Help Locate the Next Step Quickly" (see p. 582 and consider each of the four criteria)

  • Would be helpful to provide basic preview of the structure

If necessary, help the writer edit one step for improved usability, detail, and imperative mood.

H)  Do the images or graphics enhance the:

  • (1) usefulness of the instruction set?  How?
    • Yes shows the set up process
  • (2) persuasiveness, and of the instruction set?  How?
    • Could use more images, less condensed steps
  • (3) content?  How so?
    • More images, see phase 1

(See Anderson p. 340 for comments on each consideration)

Phase 3

  1. what should be each author's goals for a test?
    1. To see how efficiently an individual can perform the task based on the set of instructions
      1. For a beginner
      2. For someone that has some experience
  2. who should the test readers be (both the ideal readers and accessible readers)?
    1. See above
  3. how might each member create and conduct their test?
    1. Have individuals perform this, but finding a dark room may be difficult (time limitations)
  4. will you need consent forms for next class?
    1. I don't think so
