Neil's Project 2 Planning Guide
1. My goal for this project is to create instructions in the form of sequential steps that will help the WikiHow community rough-plumb a bathroom in a basement. My persuasive goal is for people to read every step and enjoy it (as much as it is possible, considering the lengthy project)
2. Responses to the 6 question:
- These instructions will give the reader the process necessary to rough-plumb their basement to be able to install a sink and toilet.
- Yes, there will be a disclaimer with the skills that the project will need i.e. soldering, breaking/laying concrete etc.
- There will be a list of tools and parts and suggestions on where to find them.
- There will be a lengthy list of materials and suggestions on where to find them.
- Step 1 will tell them what they need to do when they are ready.
- There will be a troubleshooting section and most likely every step will have what to do if something goes wrong.
3. http://www.wikihow.com/Install-a-Bathtub
http://www.wikihow.com/Install-a-Shower-Stall
Both of these articles are good with nice illustrations. I would like to be able to have nice pictures like that but will most likely have to use google images. I like how each step has bullet points, I think I will need to adopt a similar format
4. I will need to research a bit about plumbing such as sizes of pipes so I can let people know whats out there and what they should be looking for. Most of the steps will be from experience and collaborating with family members who also have experience with plumbing.
5. Draft of steps: (don't worry there will be MANY sub-steps)
Preliminary Work:
- Identify the main waste pipe that goes from the upstairs bathroom to the sewer
- Identify where you want the sink and the toilet to be placed in the basement
- Detect the cast iron pipe leading from the waste pipe to the sewer using a metal detector
Breaking the Floor:
- Break the concrete floor exposing the stack to sewer pipe and break a section where the new pipe will be laid
- Clear out the concrete debris and 4" of sand that the pipe lays in
- Cut the stack to sewer pipe
- Connect the new pipe that the toilet and sink will flow into to the stack to sewer pipe
Rebuilding:
- Cover over the pipe with sand (4")
- Pour concrete over the top (4")
- Enjoy your rough-plumbed basement bathroom
