Claudio's Project 2 Planning Guide

Defining My Goals

My goal will be to effectively show a user how to browse the internet using a text based browser on a web server. If this goal can be achieved in my instruction set, it will allow users to streamline some of their processes when it comes to managing or maintaining web servers.

Intended Readers

My intended readers will likely be technical users who have access to a remote web server and wish to browse the web directly from their server to streamline some process, like googling an error that's thrown. The instructions will allow a user to choose, install, use and troubleshoot a text based browser on a remote web server but will not go into detail on how to access the server remotely (via ssh) or how to use the web server's operating system. The readers will require a computer with an internet connection as well as ssh access to a web server. The instruction set will also include troubleshooting information along the way so that user's can fix quick issues as they go and possibly a more thorough troubleshooting section at the end of the instruction set.

The WikiHow Community

This is a response to a requested topic on WikiHow. Some similar entries I found:

How to Use SSH

  • The use of videos to guide the user through the steps was effective.
  • Breaking the instruction set into 3 main parts and drilling down from there is a great way to organize the process.

How to Install Ubuntu Server

  • Good use of graphics for each step, especially the use of the big red arrow.
  • Steps don't go into much detail. They direct you to an option and don't provide much information for other options or when they do, they don't give you enough information to make an informed decision.
  • Steps sort of re-iterate what is already visible in the installer and image.

Research

Since there's a wide variety of text based browsers available, I'll need to compile a list of the most popular ones and find out their pros and cons. Using this information I can offer advice to the user that will allow them to make a decision on which text based browser to use. If I can find similarities in the functionality and behavior, I can also explore the possibility of a general instruction set that will work with a majority of text based browsers. I will also be installing these text based browsers myself to ensure the process works.

Draft of Steps

1. Pick a Text Based Browser

  • Since there are many, I will need to present users with their options. Perhaps mention the WikiHow's specific focus on one.

2. Obtain and Install the Text Based Browser

  • Since these text based browsers will be accessed from web servers, I'll need to provide instructions on how to install them on a web server.

3. How to Browse using the Text Based Browser

  • Instructions on how to navigate the browser and how to get to a webpage will be provided here.

4. Optional Configuration Options

  • Present the user with some optional configuration options to modify their browsing experience.

Example of Lynx Install (Text Based Web Browser)

Obtained by doing a quick install of Lynx and taking a screenshot of my terminal.
