Jai's Reading Response

Page history last edited by Jai Govind 9 years, 2 months ago

Anderson lists many helpful guidelines, some that I would have never thought of while writing on my own. Everyone knows that a résumé needs to be error free, but they think less about the presentation of it. Anderson makes it clear that a résumé needs to be well balanced, attractive, and easy to read. It needs to be very specific, concise, and written with proper verb tense so that the reader can easily get the information that they want. Another tip that I found interesting was listing the most relevant job first, because it appeals to the reader. Also the idea that applying for a slightly different job will mean that you need to tweak certain portions to appeal to a different reader. Stating professional objectives using proper tone, and providing valid references are also some essential portions to a well catered résumé. Thinking about the reader is essentially everything while writing a résumé, even though it is about the writer.

For Project 1, I have found two jobs positions that I will apply for at International Paper and General Motors. I have heard of General Motors, but it is the first time that I have encountered International Paper. Both organizations list very specific job qualifications, but I will be researching them for my specific field of study. The position at General Motors is related to fuel cell development that requires a mechanical, chemical, or aeronautical engineer. Chemical engineering is my major, but I plan on looking for better specifics relating to this position. International Paper is specifically looking for my major, but I will have to do research into their work. Going to the organization’s website, contacting current employees, and looking for credible sources online will be some ways that I plan on researching them.

I plan to write a résumé that is approximately one page in length, because I want to implement some of Anderson’s tips. It will have an experiential emphasis, because I will be new to my career like most students graduating from college. I have always been a full-time student, and never worked anywhere professionally. This project will challenging due to that, but I will highlight my courses, future goals, and experience to meet the qualifications required by employers.

This course is definitely important to this résumé, because Engineers write for at least 20% of their work week. I would also list my foreign languages, even though they might not be looking for it. Another course I would include would be laboratory for organic chemistry, because it shows practical experience. Listing some major courses in my curriculum and their importance would also be something that I would like to include.

I have never applied for any professional work, so I have no résumé of any kind to upload.
