This section in our book greatly explains how to create a resume which not only shows off your personal skills and experience, but will also grab the attention of any employer you are sending the resume to. One small but potentially significant tip I learned from this chapter, which I didn’t think of before, was how I could include specific classes I took in my resume that may impress the potential employer. After reading this chapter, the main concept and strategy that is emphasized was the question, “how can I persuade this employer that I have the technical expertise, the supporting skills, and the personal qualities for this particular job and also make myself stand out from the rest?” I was already aware of this way of thinking while building a resume, but this chapter provided great tips and ways you could potentially answer this significant question.
It was relatively easy finding two job positions for a field I will be going into, which is physical therapy. I cannot apply to be a physical therapist because I do not have the schooling yet, but I can apply for physical therapy technician positions. Two great positions are currently open in the Detroit area. The first being a position for the Sterling Heights branch for the company named Team Rehabilitation. The second is another technician position posted by the business Concentra Inc. in Troy Michigan. I already have a good idea about what a technician does because I have shadowed physical therapists in both hospitals and out-patient care centers.
I will be revising my current resume which is at the length of about one page. My current resume has more of an experiential emphasis to it instead of a skills emphasis. This is because I am currently an undergraduate student who may not possess certain qualities and accomplishments that more experienced individuals may have. The text also states that experiential resumes are mainly used by college students who are “new to their careers.” (Page 27)
Lastly, I have a few classes under my belt that are absolutely imperative to have taken to apply for a technician position. The first is anatomy and physiology and the second is human physiology. The knowledge I have gained from both of these classes is knowledge needed for everyday work with individuals with bodily injuries.
