Dear Professor Grogan,

I am currently deciding on classes for my winter semester, and I would like to take your English 3050 course on technical writing.

I am currently a Chemical Engineering major, and I have realized that technical writing is an important skill for all future engineers. Engineers need an efficient method with which they can convey their ideas, and start projects that will aid future advancements in science and technology. This can be challenging especially when projects include an extensive amount of information, and is not easily understood by the audience.
Engineers need technical writing skills to make it easy for fellow colleagues, managers, and company executives to understand the brilliance of their proposed projects. Poorly conveyed information can lead to the loss of confidence in those projects when in fact they could have a beneficial impact.

Technical writing connects teams working separately on massive projects increasing both efficiency and productivity. Projects usually involve many teams, but no communication between those people could lead to disastrous consequences. In 1983, Air Canada flight 143 ran out of fuel mid-flight due to the lack of communication between two teams that used different systems of measurement. It becomes increasingly important for Engineers to communicate using technical writing to avoid such errors in the future.

Therefore, I believe that mastering technical writing in this course will add an important skill to my academic career.

As a writer, I have picked up many strengths along the years such as being organized, informative, persuasive, and contradictive. I have written various types of papers, including some technical writing in the form of professional letters and memos. Grammar has been my greatest weakness; however, I have significantly improved over the years. Being informative and organized are two skills that I believe I can offer to the class. These skills are deeply-rooted in technical writing, and will prove valuable to the class.
