Dear Jared Grogan,

My name is Kristen Dolgos, and I would like to submit this letter of application in order to register for your English 3050 class for the Winter 2015 semester.

My adviser recommended that I fulfill my Intermediate Composition requirement this semester. Upon reviewing all of my options, only one class stood out: Technical Communications. Being a Mathematics major with a focus in Actuarial Science, I feel like I could gain more from taking this course over all the others.

This class could be beneficial in the long run. It may not be my profession goal, but it is the most applicable to my field. I plan to work for an insurance company as an actuary; if no positions are available at the time, my experience in Technical Communications could be my point of entry at the firm until my long-term goal can be achieved.

I also have confidence that this course will help me improve as a writer. Some of my assets include following instructions to complete assignments correctly and effectively, and re-organizing and re-wording ideas and phrases until it reads clearly.

Upon looking at the syllabus for this class, I believe that it touches on some specific strengths of my writing.

•        I write effectively.

•        I have good grammar.

•        I am able to identify audiences and adjust my style of writing based on that.

I also think this course could help me improve on some of my weaknesses.

•        I have had limited research opportunities, and the skills I have gained could use some improvement.

•        I have never had to write some of the documents included in this class (resumes, instructions, technical descriptions, etc.). Therefore, I would learn new methods.

•        I have always struggled with writing in a group; the work in this class could help me overcome that.

I know I could grow from taking Technical Communications and that I could contribute to the class as well. As a supervisor at my job, I have a strong leadership role. I believe that this is valuable with group work. I know how to get things done in an effective matter.

Since this course is the only Intermediate Composition class I desire to take and one that I know will be the most beneficial to my school and career, I am eager to learn. I will bring a positive attitude every time I enter the classroom. Whenever I have a question, I will ask it. Whenever I have a good idea, I will speak my mind. I believe this will not only be an advantage to myself, but other students in my section as well.

Thank you for your time. I hope you consider my application and accept my registration to English 3050 this semester.
