Suggestions From the Text about Steps
- Number steps, and only include one action per step. In a given step, only include enough information to get them to the next step. (Obviously, there may be exceptions to this.)
- Distinguish what the reader will do from what they might observe and make those actions stand out. ("Continue whipping cream for 10 minutes on high speed. Soft peaks will begin to form." as opposed to "Soft peaks will form if you continue to whip the cream at high speed for about 10 minutes.")
- When drafting, make space for Graphics as necessary, and Use graphics to: show where things are, demonstrate how to perform steps, illustrate the results of steps
- Try to anticipate places where readers might make mistakes (or think they did) and provide information to help them avoid or remedy the situation. ("Add orange syrup to mixture and continue to beat. Mixture may become grainy, but DON'T PANIC, this is normal." or "If the program stops responding, press Ctrl + C to get back to the prompt and try again.")
- Your text also contains specific advice for (and sometimes examples of) print, web-page, and video instructions.
