SWA 1

Dear Mr. Grogan,

I’ve done a lot of different things in my life, despite only being eighteen. I’ve played around with different things to express myself with and found that physical words is an area I can always improve in. English is a complicated language and is virtually impossible to master, even when you live in a country where it’s predominantly spoken. Nobody knows every word up to date, but those who are authors are damn good at using them. Those people have a way to communicate with the audience that’s noteworthy enough to be published, and, if anything, that makes a solid point of Technical Communication. Books are all around us, as well as reports and resumes and letters and… The list goes on. We use them every day, almost as much as we breathe. All of this being said, I believe it would make sense to actually learn what they’re composed of. I know there’s going to be a time where I’ll need this skill, being that I’m a college student and all. Here’s a fact about me: I’m going to become a video game designer, no questions asked. If I have to drop out of college, I will find another way with no question. The road I’m currently taking to get there, which would be Wayne Sate, is filled with things other than drawing and programming. A perfect example is the Honors College, a school that’s paying me to attend Wayne. Their academic programs are heavy on writing—conveniently while I’m in English 3050. If I don’t learn what there is to know, I don’t get paid. If I don’t get paid, the road to achieving my dream becomes longer, especially since I’m going to need these skills anyway. I plan on getting started by the time I’m twenty-three, and because of that I need your class.

As a writer I am ‘okay’. I can’t consider myself good because I’d be arrogant, nor could I call myself bad because I’d be lying. I can write in a very aggressive manner at times, and that is only a strength when I’m right or when my opinion is favored. I tend to be poetic in some of the things I say, causing the reader to think deeper into the meaning behind what I type and scrawl. This gives me an advantageous position when it comes to moving people. I’ve learned that powerful writing gives you the ability to persuade, express, and inform those who read it beyond what they would expect. This pushes me to put my heart into my work and give the best I can in regards to what people are actually looking for. However, this can also be a weakness, as rambling is an easy thing for me to do. Being able to tell someone exactly how you’re feeling by making a well-structured paragraph is nice, but doing it without leading the reader in the wrong direction is even better, which is something I plan to improve upon. Therefore I have a few basic but nice things to offer the class: my attention, my attitude, and my passion. First off, there’s nothing else better for me to do besides learn how to do something that I’ll need to know in preparation for later on—victory loves preparation, after all. Secondly, pessimism can be a serious pain. Not too many people are always going to be excited about writing. Accepting that the work is a big load at times is but a baby step in the process. If I cannot get past the ‘lazy’ aspect of doing college-level work, for what reason do I have to believe that I’m actually making the best and getting the most out of any course? Lastly I offer my passion, a trait that has driven me through a lot of muck in my lifetime. I can see the point of what there is to do, and through that I can retain what’s being given to me. It’s the same way people see water; the more you tell yourself you need it the more you’ll be inclined to believe that you need it, although human beings need it anyway. Being passionate about what is being done is believing that what’s going on is beneficial and will make things easier. It’s appreciation, and a safe addiction one can utilize.
